A similar alternation is given in the closing phrase of ‘A Mother’s Grief’, Op. 15 No. 4, here between flattened (Aeolian or descending melodic minor) and sharpened (ascending melodic minor) forms of the variable minor degrees and . Conversely, in the later ‘Bådnlåt’ (‘Lullaby’) from the 19 Norwegian Folksongs, Op. 66 No. 15, the snaking thirds in the accompaniment articulate first raised then lowered versions of these pitches, in other words ‘ascending’ then ‘descending’ melodic minor scale-forms (Ex. 2.2). The initial minor/whole-tone tincture, alongside the parallel thirds, might call to mind the later practice of Sibelius.10
